The transfer of invasive species is considered as the largest threat to the aquatic environment and shipping represent the main vector of transport of organisms across water bodies. In order to decrease the number of new bio-invasions, the International Maritime Organisation has prepared the International Ballast Water Convention in 2004 and it entered into force in 2017 after >30 states representing >35% of the global tonnage have ratified. A similar instrument exist in the USA and this member state is not a party of the BWM Convention.
The presentation will include an explanation of the regulatory regimes existing, the process of type approval testing of ballast water management systems and an overview of the challenges emerging during the compliance verification programs initiated globally.
