Eric BanelDirector General for French Maritime Affairs, Fisheries, and Aquaculture (DGAMPA)

Eric Banel is the French General Director for Maritime Affairs, Fisheries, and Aquaculture. Appointed Director General for Maritime Affairs, Fisheries and Aquaculture on March 2, 2022 by the Council of Ministers, Eric Banel was since October 14, 2021 in charge of the creation and prefiguration of the new organization, merging all the maritime activities in one single national maritime administration.
Since 2020, Eric Banel was Director for Fisheries and Aquaculture at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food.
From 2018 to 2020, he was head of the French maritime administration for the South-Atlantic area as interregional director of the sea in Bordeaux.
From 2017 to 2018, he was adviser to the Prime Minister for maritime economy and ports at the Prime minister office (General Secretariat for the Sea).
From 2012 to 2017, Eric Banel was General Director of Armateurs de France, the French shipowners association, member of the High Council of the Merchant Navy and of the National Council of the Sea and coastal activities.
From 2010 to 2012, Eric Banel was special adviser to the Minister of ecology, sustainable developement and the sea, in charge of maritime affairs, ports, rivers, marine renewable energy, coastal activities and oversea territories.
From 2007 to 2010, he was Director of Maritime Affairs in the Indian Ocean, based in La Réunion island. Prior to this he was a technical advisor for fisheries and environment to the Minister of Agriculture and Food, from 2006 to 2007.
From 2004 to 2006, he held various positions within the Department of Maritime Affairs, particularly in matters of environment, marine pollution, safety and security at sea, control and surveillance.
He began his career in 2001 in Boulogne-sur-Mer as deputy director of maritime affairs for the Channel and the North Sea.
A graduate of the National School for Maritime Affairs and of the Institute of Advanced Studies in National Defense, Eric Banel holds a LL.M in political science, in international and European law and in Chinese literature and civilization. He is Knight of the Legion of Honour. Eric Banel has a solid expertise in european and international institutions, maritime affairs, shipping, fisheries, energy and marine environment.
